Across 3,772 dues charges issued by 41 fraternity and sorority chapters on Dueflow, the median member pays 12.6 days after the charge goes out, only 37.9% pay on or before the due date, and 17% take longer than a month. Sororities and fraternities handle members who can't afford dues with installment payment plans, private hardship conversations with the treasurer, chapter or Panhellenic dues scholarships, status changes (inactive, early alumna), and university fee waivers. National foundation member-assistance grants at Chi Omega, Alpha Chi Omega, and Phi Mu exclude dues by rule, and some organizations have no hardship mechanism at all. Phi Kappa Tau returned to chapter billing for Fall 2026 and lets chapters collect locally by any method. Delta Upsilon encourages re:Members but does not require it. No. Chapter dues, national fees, and social fees are personal expenses, so a 529 withdrawal for them is taxable and owes a 10% additional tax on earnings.
